31 Fireplace Decor Ideas to Elevate the Focal Point of Your Home

home fireplace design ideas

Jean-Christophe Aumas’ multihued Paris apartment houses both the highly sought artistic director and the stunning assemblage of furniture he’s brought back from his travels. A historic, stately marble fireplace, topped with a mirror, contrasts with the eclectic furnishings and multi-colored vignettes throughout the apartment. The open-plan home’s core is the towering chimney—clad in the same double-long, thin bricks that sheathe the Kolumba museum in Cologne, Germany.

“Plaster is my favorite medium, so naturally over the years I’ve done a number of plaster mantels and full-height mantel/trumeau installations. The result is somehow both dynamic and understated.” For a local client, for example, she created a sunburst-style surround that was inspired by one found in Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney’s studio. If you use your fireplace, you can incorporate decorative screens, vintage andirons, and tools to add charm and interest. If you can't or choose not to light a fire in the hearth, you can fill it with LED flame or wax pillar candles, plants, decor objects, decorative firewood, or even books for an eclectic feel. Whether you use it or not, you can treat the mantel as a rotating display of favorite objects or seasonal decor that can be rotated in and out throughout the year.

Create a Cozy Atmosphere

A meticulously carved mantel and surround blend into a contemporary space by John Merkl when flanked by cushioned benches and velvet armchairs. An ocean-view photograph hung over the fireplace is an updated alternative to traditional seascapes. In a large bedroom, a central fireplace divides the sleeping and lounging areas. Pastel pink and aqua are set off by pops of fuchsia and bright blue, while the beige surrounding the fireplace coordinates with the coastal vibe. The ornate mantel and trim are a good fit for the color palette and delicate accessories from Kristina Phillips Interior Design.

Ground an Oversized Space

A modern brick outdoor fireplace, tall and slim, is flanked by Philippe Starck’s outdoor chairs for Kartell for cozy fireside seating. Add a mirror to your fireplace mantel to create the illusion of a bigger, brighter room. This simple decor hack will open up your space without having to do any hard work. The ideal size of the mirror should be two thirds the size of the mantel; this way, it won't look too small, but you'll still have room to add decorations on either side. Gather your favorite artwork, a mirror, and other decor and layer it on your fireplace's mantel. This will add depth to the space and create an eye-catching focal point in your living room.

Install a Mosaic Surround

Robb Studio created a sculptural fireplace using exposed concrete, steel, and shou sugi ban wood for the hearth seat. Turn the built-in bookshelf next to your fireplace into an eye-catching decor piece. This will give you easy access to keep your fire burning and a unique living room accent piece. Including a few black accessories throughout the room helps ease the transition between the striking black facade and the surrounding white walls. Potted plants, including vibrant pink orchids, introduce color and organic appeal.

There are plenty of family room ideas with fireplaces as they add that warm, welcoming atmosphere which is essential for the family room. Embrace on trend brick fireplace designs that will bring a warm focal point to the room even when not lit. In the converted barn, a modern fireplace with a sleek, shiny chimney contrasts with the wide, reclaimed wood floorboards and textured exposed brick wall. Dressed in smooth granite, this modern fireplace idea skips the mantel and ornamentation altogether. Incorporating wood tones and plush fabrics softens the look of the stone and makes the living room feel less severe. The limestone fireplace is the focal point of this warm, comfortable living room, featuring an elevated stone hearth and a white wraparound mantel.

Stunning Fireplace Decor Ideas That'll Make Your Home Chic and Cozy

Breathe new life into a dated brick fireplace by adding a white wood surround over top. Fill it with fresh flowers and greenery, then layer in an antique-style painting — like interior designer Francesca Grace does here. Elegant white molding above this white brick fireplace dresses it up, emphasizing its role as a natural focal point while highlighting a colorful piece of abstract art. To create a harmonious look and help two different materials (such as wood and brick) blend well, paint them the same color. This will maintain their texture for slight contrast but instantly achieve a uniform appearance. Clean lines, minimalist design, and a symmetrical layout define this modern fireplace wall.

Lighten It Up

'Starting a fire in a fireplace is a ritual you add to your home and your life. The warmth and grandeur of a fireplace significantly alter a rooms atmosphere even with no logs on or burning brightly. Fireplace ideas have seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years, and with a growing desire to make our homes feel cozy and welcoming, this is no surprise. A warming central point around which the family can gather, relaxing in its generous warmth and enjoy the atmospheric flickering of the flames. The family chose Glidden’s Velvet Slipper as an accent color for the wood storage reading seat, custom built but Geoffrey and the family.

The home’s layout revolves around a central glass and metal "campfire" that burns beneath a suspended mantel. Since it’s located at the access level, the fireplace’s flickering warmth can be enjoyed throughout the house. The surrounding floor is covered with hexagon tiles cut from marble, which transition into tiles made of birch log in the rest of the house. Stone installed along an entire wall commands attention in this light, neutral living room.

A Wilderness Reserve colonial era-inspired brick fireplace with a paver hearth and wood-beam mantel sets off an exposed metal chimney. The mod upholstery prints, mixed patterns, and vivid pops of raspberry and lime hues add a contemporary accent. The dark surround and antiqued metal interior are a sleek contrast to the ivory wooden columns, trim, and mantel, while the decor—pottery, glass, wood, dried florals—also blends color and texture. Traditional fireplaces have a rustic look and are usually built into your home’s wall with a faux, natural stone or brick chimney. We love this simple, fuss-free fireplace and the log storage underneath is not only a handy addition but looks really stylish too. This living room is on the traditional side, but this style of fireplace would look amazing in a modern, minimalist space, with the logs adding some warmth and texture.

The wooden fireplace mantel and the showcases on either side of the fireplace design help you to seamlessly showcase your extraordinary pieces of artwork, souvenirs, books and storied collections. For a clean and modern look, install a marble fireplace surround that’s flush with the wall. Marble is a timeless material that works just as well in a traditional setting as it does in a contemporary space. Complement beige slabs of marble with warm white walls and light hardwood floors to create an open and airy feel. A fresh coat of white paint brightens this modern living room and updates the brick fireplace. Built-in shelves and a cozy pillow-adorned bench flank the fireplace, adding practical storage as well as visual balance and a sense of symmetry.

Uncle Clay's House of Pure Aloha Waikiki Things To Do

uncle clay's house of pure aloha

After serving hundreds of thousands of bowls of shave ice to guests at The "Original" Uncle Clay's HOPA, Uncle Clay and Bronson were asked to stretch their wings and grow the dream to reach even more people. So in 2018, HOPA opened its second House at the most destined place in all of Hawai'i--Ala Moana Center--serving a new community there the same beloved shave ice, an expanded menu of locally made ice cream and other treats, and of course a whole lot of Pure Aloha. In 2020, due to challenges with COVID-19, HOPA Ala Moana was forced to close. Today, nearly 40,000 Native Hawaiians call Los Angeles home (an impressive stat beaten only by Las Vegas, Hawai’i’s unofficial “ninth island”). And it’s the islands’ former residents, like the Big Island’s Maile and Bruce Goold, or Kevin Lee, who grew up working in his family’s Korean restaurant Sorabol in Honolulu, who make eating Kahuku-style fried shrimp, shave ice, and saimin so enjoyable on the Mainland. From bowling alley diners to poke shacks, here are the 11 best Hawaiian restaurants in LA.

11 Essential Hawaiian Restaurants to Try in Los Angeles

With the same love and spirit of his Uncle, Bronson took Uncle Clay around the shoulders, "This dream is too important. We can't give up". Get them while they last; limited time signed Oaths. This restaurant has been reported as permanently closed. Just when it seemed there was no choice and Uncle Clay was being forced to close the doors to his dreams, his nephew, Bronson, stepped in. Eventually, rising rents and shifting economic conditions had drained all of the earthly resources Uncle Clay had. But his spirit of Pure Aloha and his love for every guest, neighbor, and friend never cracked.

Essential Hawaiian Restaurants to Try in Los Angeles

One of the few Hawaiian restaurants in the San Gabriel Valley, Aloha Food Factory has been serving homestyle favorites in a blue-brick shack off the 710 freeway since 1994 — even fending off extinction in 2021, when predatory developers planned to turn the beloved Alhambra institution into a car wash. Don’t miss the macadamia nut pancakes, a short but mighty stack slathered in a “secret cream sauce” (their words) that tastes like a big, ol’ dollop of cream cheese frosting made of whipped bananas and a Jack Johnson song. HOPA re-revolutionized Hawaii’s iconic snack by going back to its origins.

Yet, the small business struggled, but Uncle Clay never wavered. Bring the beautiful presence of Pure Aloha to your living room, bedroom, office, or shop for yourself, loved ones, and customers to enjoy. Each piece is handprinted with loving care, one card at a time, by Linda of Aloha Letterpress in beautiful Maui, with an antique Chandler & Price printing press. Prints are done on 100% cotton, 220# thick, pearl white paper and come with a classic wood easel stand. He took all he had and threw himself into running the humble crack seed and candy shop "Doe Fang" nestled in the quiet lush valley of ʻĀina Haina, Oahu. Since opening our House in 2011, we’ve served hundreds of thousands of guests, from ages 1 to 100, from across the islands and the world.

THE original all-natural hawaiian shave ice

Many of the dishes enjoyed in Hawai’i today, such as pipikaula, laulau, kalua pig, poke, tripe stew, loco moco, and Spam musubi (a delicious pantheon best described in Sean Na’auao’s classic 1998 song, “Fish and Poi”), are living documents of the former sovereign kingdom’s beautiful yet brutal history. Ancient Hawaiians cultivated taro, breadfruit, and sweet potatoes and discovered ingenious uses for fish, limu (edible underwater plants), and other bounties of the sea. European sailors and missionaries introduced cattle and livestock to the islands in 1778, in addition to disease-spreading fleas and viral infections. It’s the perfect way to cool down and beat the summer heat. At Uncle Clay’s House of Pure Aloha (HOPA), the shaved ice comes in a bowl of delicious fruity syrup topped with things such as the signature sweet dream sauce, locally made ice cream from Lalamilo Farms, fresh fruit, mochi or adzuki beans. Small, locally made snacks including li hing mui seeds, cuttlefish or even taro chips are also available if you need a quick bite..

Using only premium all-natural ingredients for homemade syrups and locally made ice cream. The move at Rutt’s Cafe — one of Los Angeles’ longest-running Hawaiian restaurants with outposts in West LA, Azusa, and Gardena — is to arrive for breakfast. Since 1976, this Hawaiian restaurant has been serving local favorites, like Spam and eggs, and a kalua pig breakfast sandwich served over a sweet roll.

Mauna Loa® joins fellow local brand Kahala to bring the Aloha spirit to the mainland with a pop-up shop at Westfield Century City in Los Angeles. The two Hawai‘i brands team up to give Angelenos a chance to experience Hawaiʻi with Kahala’s line of aloha apparel and Mauna Loa’s delicious macadamia snacks. The two-month, pop-up event will feature Kahala’s signature apparel, including its Collector’s Edition — a limited series of aloha shirts, featuring iconic 1940s heritage designs and made from rayon filament fabric by the same Japanese mills that produced Kahala’s original shirts.

“We were absolutely thrilled when Kahala approached us to partner with them in their pop-up. We are both heritage Hawaiʻi brands with rich histories, still evolving through innovation and new partnerships to stay relevant and fresh, while being authentic to Hawaiʻi. The collaboration with them is a match made in paradise,” says Danielle Laubenstein, Director of Global Marketing for Mauna Loa.

It’s fusion time at Malama Pono, an upscale Sherman Oaks restaurant where yuzu aguachile, garlic naan, seafood ricotta dumplings, and “Abuelita’s vegan ceviche” live side-by-side on the menu. The “Hapa” Style small plate is a lot of fun — two pieces of Spam crispy rice are mixed-and-matched with two pieces of tuna crispy rice. From 1996, Uncle Clay grew into a beloved figure of the community, serving his sweet treats seven days a week and spreading Pure Aloha with everyone he met.

Since October 7, there has certainly been constant escalation in terms of tension on campus. And that became a huge moment in what was characterized as suppression of pro-Palestinian activism on campus, effectively rendering those groups, quote, unquote, unauthorized. And so instead of going to celebrate her successful appearance before Congress, Shafik walks out of the hearing room and gets in a black SUV to go right back to that war room, where she’s immediately confronted with a major dilemma. It basically boils down to this, she had just gone before Congress and told them, I’m going to get tough on these protests. So either she gets tough and risks inflaming tension on campus or she holds back and does nothing and her words before Congress immediately look hollow. So these students in real-time are beginning to test some of the things that Columbia’s president has just said before Congress.

The event attracts some of the world’s leading designers, collectors, and fans for an unpretentious and unmatched day. Unlike concours d'elegance events, judging is predominately conducted by automotive designers using professional design criteria, not based on restoration or authenticity. The event attracts some of the world's leading designers, collectors, and fans for an unpretentious and unmatched day. Vehicle entries are eligible to win several awards, including one that is judged and presented by visually impaired adults, members of the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology’s Adult “Visionaries” support group. For this award, visually impaired and blind men and women wear white gloves and select, strictly by touch, a winner. This aspect of having visually impaired judges at the event continues to make EyesOn Design a truly unique car show.

This is “The Daily.” Today, the story of how Columbia University has become the epicenter of a growing showdown between student protesters, college administrators, and Congress over the war in Gaza and the limits of free speech. I’m a producer with “The Daily.” Just walked out of the 116 Street Station. It’s the main station for Columbia’s Morningside Heights campus. And it’s day seven of the Gaza solidarity encampment, where a hundred students were arrested last Thursday.

Interior Design Trends Here To Stay In 2023

“We are loving deep, moody tones and their ability to make spaces feel so intentional. Try painting a room all in the same color (including the ceiling and trim) or adding wallpaper with the same color as other textiles in the room,” says Scheck. Furthermore, developers want their properties to appeal to as many potential buyers as possible, so they are still building open floor plan homes.

It was edited by Devon Taylor and Lisa Chow, contains research help by Susan Lee, original music by Marion Lozano and Dan Powell, and was engineered by Chris Wood. Our theme music is by Jim Brunberg and Ben Landsverk of Wonderly. That’s it for “The Daily.” I’m Michael Barbaro.

EyesOn Design is one of America’s premier automotive events.

You have faculty, including professors, who are not necessarily sympathetic to the protesters’ view of the war, who are really outraged about what Shafik has done here. They feel that she’s crossed a boundary that hasn’t been crossed on Columbia’s campus in a really long time. But back on campus, some of the students and faculty who had been watching the hearing came away with a very different set of conclusions.

And on Wednesday, Hamas released a video of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an Israeli-American dual citizen, whom Hamas has held hostage since October 7. It was the first time that he has been shown alive since his captivity began. His kidnapping was the subject of a “Daily” episode in October that featured his mother, Rachel. In response to Hamas’s video, Rachel issued a video of her own, in which she spoke directly to her son. There’s a video that goes viral of one of them shouting at Jewish students, go back to Poland, go back to Europe.

The Award is determined by its previous recipients, who are other design luminaries. Do they hold back, like at Harvard, where there were dramatic videos of students literally running into Harvard yard with tents. And so Columbia, really, I think, at the end of the day, may have kicked off some of this. But they are now in league with a whole bunch of other universities that are struggling with the same set of questions.

When the Viper team was first created, Herb called Roy Sjoberg (Team Leader and Chief Engineer) to set up a 30-minute interview. At the end of the interview, Herb asked when he would know if he made the team. Roy replied, “Oh you made the team after the first 15 mins; I just wanted to pick your brain for ideas! ”  When Herb joined the team, he commented “I was so stoked, I didn’t sleep for 3 nights”.

There’s barricades, steel barricades, caution tape. And I’m able to — all members of the public, you’re able to walk through. "All-white chandeliers are a yes from me in 2023!" declares Washington, D.C., decorator and lifestyle blogger Rashida Banks, who, like Burkle and Poston, is also anticipating an increased love for chocolate brown walls. 2023 is the year of "anything cozy," say Birmingham, Alabama, design duo Anna Still and Marguerite Johnson. They love incorporating "fabrics that are soft to the touch, like velvet, mohair, and bouclé" into their projects, like the Grant Trick bouclé pillow shown here. There are several aspects of traditional design that experts predict will only become more mainstream, including intricate millwork.

But at the very beginning hours, I think there was a sense of, we did it. After the break, what all of this has looked like to a student on Columbia’s campus. Yeah, this big moment that tripped up her predecessors and cost them their jobs, it seems like she has cleared that hurdle and dispatched with the Congressional committee that could have been one of the biggest threats to her presidency. So Columbia’s president has passed this test before this committee.

This unique EyesOn Design show differs from other car shows, in that it celebrates design in all vehicle categories – from pre-war classics, sports cars and exotic foreign makes to muscle cars, hot rods, customs and motorcycles. In addition, the show is completely focused on the design. It does not focus on vehicle restoration, provenance, rarity or vehicle dollar value. Instead, automotive designers choose the theme, play a role in the selection of vehicle categories, plan each of the sub-events and approve poster art, graphic design and other aspects of the show’s format. Vehicle judging is conducted exclusively by automotive designers from original equipment manufacturers from around the world.

To celebrate the design revolution being spurred on by increased electrification, EyesOn Design at Ford House will highlight design present and future with the inclusion of new electric production vehicles and future electric concepts. We're thinking about how to update our spaces with the latest trends. Though our personal quarters are meant to reflect our own aesthetics, staying up to date on the most recent fads can also offer a breath of fresh air.

“No more having to wait for the bathroom, you can just p–s yourself and say it’s the design,” one person wrote online, The Sun reported. EyesOn Design has announced that Professor Gordon Murray CBE will be the recipient of the 2024 EyesOn Design Lifetime Design Achievement Award. Sponsored by the Junior League of Buffalo and the Buffalo News, this year’s showcase will take place in the St Patrick’s Friary, a 20,070-square-foot Gothic abode built in 1891. Timothy Allen Creative, Erin Kent Interiors, and Michael P Design are among the decorators. Today’s episode was produced by Sydney Harper, Asthaa Chaturvedi, Olivia Natt, Nina Feldman, and Summer Thomad, with help from Michael Simon Johnson.

Order the perch dinner ($20.09) and you'll net a bushel of pristine filets that are barely breaded, flash fried and absolutely delectable in every way. The barely-there flour and cornmeal dusting gives the fish just a hint of texture while shielding the delicate flesh beneath.

In place of fat lumps of pricy seafood is a wild mash of shredded crab, herbs, seasoning and spice. You can enjoy it straight up as a starter, but I think it works better as a sandwich ($10.59), where the zing and zest are balanced by the bun. Other seafood starters include clam chowder, steamed mussels and a simple shrimp cocktail ($9.69), which benefits from a kicky horseradish-spiked cocktail sauce. We have delicious turf as well, from juicy delmonico steaks, chicken, and more. In addition to the fried fish platters there are more elaborate seafood entrees like bouillabaisse, crab-stuffed shrimp, sauteed scallops, crab legs and shrimp linguini with sauce. Brennan's also goes through quite a bit of steak in the form of grilled 12-ounce Delmonicos from Certified Angus Beef. For dessert, there's banana cream pie, coconut cream pie and Key lime pie, all made here daily. And when you're on the hunt for fried lake fish, you will not find any fresher, better or more expertly prepared than what is being dished up right now at Brennan's Fish House in Grand River. On a typical weekend day and night, the modest restaurant will fly through approximately 250 pounds of the stuff.
